In this short module, ‘The Rainbow Umbrella’ we’ll answer some common questions about the experiences of LGBT+ people in the workplace. We’ll focus on how you can help to make your organisation a supportive environment for your LGBT+ colleagues. We’ll hear some people’s real-life stories and offer some tips and information about how to be a good ally and advocate for your LGBT+ colleagues.
As is the case with any community, LGBT+ people are a varied bunch. Some may belong to specific groups under the umbrella, or even multiple groups at once. This is because some terms describe orientation (romantic and/or sexual attraction), while others denote gender identity (how we express our idea of what constitutes masculinity, femininity, or the rejection of gender binaries altogether). You don’t need to understand, or even be familiar with, all the terms in order to be a good ally. Simply accept people for who they are.
