Fire Safety (Care Edition)
Fire safety in the healthcare environment is essential to ensure everyone’s safety – patients, staff and visitors. It can be particularly challenging since many patients will require assistance from healthcare staff to ensure their safety in the event of a fire.
In 2012-13, there were 3,600 hospital fire casualties, some of these were fatal. In the NHS the most common causes of fire are smoking, electrical items and arson.
The most obvious danger to employees, patients and visitors is the risk of sustaining burns. But fire also causes many other threats to safety that may not be immediately apparent.
In this lesson we explore government legislation, employee and employer responsibilities in regards to fire prevention and safety, understanding types of fires and constituents, safe housekeeping, and safety measures.
