PUWER in the Workplace
Employers have general duties to look after the health, safety and welfare of their employees and others who may be affected by what the organisation does or doesn’t do.
The main regulation covering equipment for use at work is the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). The main purpose of PUWER is to ensure that work equipment, regardless of its age, condition or country of origin, does not result in risks to health or safety.
PUWER applies wherever the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 applies. This module is an introduction to the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). It is designed for managers, supervisors, and others with responsibilities for health and safety in the workplace.
Additional regulations, Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), apply when using equipment that raises or lowers loads.
Note there is a separate module covering LOLER.
